[Footprint Penguin Wall Hanging](https://listium.com/@Ikatz93/4903/winter-crafts-for-children/9/footprint-penguin-wall-hanging) Item ID: `9` - You will need: > Plain artist's canvas ( I had a lot of footprints, so I used a 12" x 24" one) > Two pieces of blue cotton fabric for the background (mine had small prints that somewhat resembled the snow and sky) > Black cotton fabric for the footprints (mine had a subtle dot pattern) > Scraps of fleece or felt for the penguin accessories > Heat'n Bond Ultra Hold Iron-On Adhesive > Acrylic paint for the eyes > Snowflake buttons (optional) > Iron and hot glue gun - Instructions: > Iron the Heat'n Bond to the wrong side of the blue fabrics. Overlap the two fabrics slightly to form the "ground" and the "sky". (I cut a slightly wavy line where the two colors met.) Cut your fabric a few inches larger than the size of your canvas. Peel off the paper backing and iron your pieces directly to the front of the canvas. Wrap the excess fabric around the sides to the back and hot glue in place. > > Next, iron the Heat'n Bond to the wrong side of the black fabric. Then trace the child's footprint onto the paper-y side. Cut out the footprints. (For an example of how this is done, see a similar post I did with Footprint Butterflies). Peel off the paper backing again, position your footprints where you want them on the canvas and iron them in place. > > Now you'll want to add your penguins' clothing! We snipped off the corner of a zipper lock bag and put a dab of "red" frosting on one corner of graham cracker, then using a small butter knife, spread the frosting to make the hat and while frosting was still moist, we added one mini marshmallow for tassel. > We then added mini marshmallows for the beard, red-hot candies for the eyes and red gumdrop for the nose. Freeze 10 min. Dip balls in chocolate; place in shallow waxed paper-lined pan, allowing excess chocolate to pool at bottom of each ball. Decorate with remaining ingredients as shown in photo. > REFRIGERATE 1 hour or until firm. Keep refrigerated. > To easily coat balls with the melted chocolate, add balls, in batches, to bowl of melted chocolate. Use 2 forks to roll balls in chocolate until evenly coated. Remove balls with forks, letting excess chocolate drip back into bowl. Sprinkle generous amount of craft snow onto disposable palette. > Use disposable foam brush to apply layer of craft glue on surface of foam ball. Using the skewer roll the foam ball in the crafts snow to completely cover the surface. Use fingers to press snow into glue. Stand skewer in jar or glass to allow ball to dry. > Leaving Snowman head attached to blunt end, use 1" brush to paint the pointed end of the skewer orange. When dry use craft knife to cut off and glue as nose for the snowman. Glue on half round beads for eyes. > Use toothpick to paint red smile on snowman. Use finger to apply blush for cheeks. > Cut hat patterns from fabrics using picture as reference or use your own imagination. > For top hat cut 1 1/4" X 5" black felt strip for the crown. Glue short ends of crown into a tube that just fits around the center hole in the brim. Glue crown to brim and top to crown, let dry. Cut thin 5" purple felt strip and glue around the base of the hat crown for band. Hot glue hat to head. > For stocking hat, with right sides together, glue seams together where indicated by dashed line on pattern, let dry. You can get these balloons at a party supply store. I sorted 12 balloons out of a bag of 100, about 25 cents for 12 balloons. > In order to make the penguin shape, do not fill the balloon too full. It will be easier to manipulate the shape with less air in it. Pinch the tip of the balloon to shape a beak. > I use a thread for the neck area. Tighten the neck area a couple times while manipulating the air distribution between head and body. When it is satisfactory, secure the thread with a piece of tape. > In order to make a shapelier body, use a strip of masking tape. (Figure 4) > Tear the strips of paper towel. Soak a 50/50 glue and water mix (Equal parts of water and glue). Gently squeeze out the excess glue. Use smaller torn pieces for the beak and head area, larger torn pieces for the body area. Add 5 to 6 layers at one sitting. Let it dry overnight. (Figure 5) > \*\*\*Do not put in oven or hang outside to dry. The air inside the balloon will expand or shrink, changing the shape of the penguin. > On the bottom of the penguin, mark the leg position and puncture the holes to put the toothpicks in. > Put glue around tooth picks, Let it dry. > Use small glued paper to build up the legs. Let it dry. > Using cereal box, draw the feet (make your own shape), cut out the feet. Position the feet and glue them together. Let it dry. Build several layers of glued paper under and over the feet. > After drying several hours, shape the feet to prevent warping. > Cut the cereal box for the tail (half oval shape), position on the back with tape. Put a couple of layers of glued paper on the tail and underneath. Let it dry. > Ready to Paint: Lightly penciled eyes, fins and any special patterns on the penguin.
