- Notes: French for "shaded" or "shading," ombré refers to the progressive blending of one color hue to another, usually from dark to bright. Ombre, as used to highlight hair, is a smooth transition from darker roots to lighter ends. The goal of this method is to replicate the appearance of naturally lighter hair at the tips, as in a sun-kissed look. A more vivid and dramatic contrast between the darker roots and the brighter ends is what defines ombre highlights. When ombre highlights are applied, the roots are mostly left unaffected and the mid-lengths and ends of the hair are purposefully painted or colored. This approach works well for those who want to create a statement with their hair color while keeping up a low-maintenance regimen since the roots may grow out without needing regular touch-ups.
