The surrounding parklands are well worth a wander. Hit it on a weekday morning if you want breathing room. Pair it with a visit to QAGOMA (Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art) at Stanley Place, South Brisbane entry to the permanent collection is free, and the modern art building has a way of making even art-sceptics linger longer than expected.
About 12km from the CBD, Lone Pine is the world's largest koala sanctuary. You can hold a koala, hand-feed kangaroos, and get up close to platypuses, wombats, and Tasmanian devils. It makes for an easy half-day trip from the city. Go early to beat the crowds and catch the morning feeding sessions.
