instead of only gas only car, use an gas-electric hybrid. Some of these are record holders in mileage (gallons per mile or litres per kilometer). Some even recharge their battery from energy lost from breaking (regenerative breaking). Some cities have hybrid public transportation ( primarily hybrid buses )
