John Grisham is a New York Times bestselling author of legal thrillers, legal dramas, and other fiction. He has sold over 300 million books and has been published in 42 languages. His first book, A Time to Kill, was published in 1989 and is set in Ford County, Mississippi. It follows the story of a lawyer, Jake Brigance, defending a black man accused of murdering the men who raped his daughter. The book was made into a movie in 1996 and was the start of Grisham's success.
