Boost pedals for guitars

Boosting the strength of an analogue audio signal is the only aspect these pedals have in common. They vary in types of colour (or tone) they impart on the signal, their price, form and power specifications. Many guitarists use boost pedals to raise the volume of their amplifiers, to pronounce certain sections in songs, bring them forward in a mix and pushing their favourite valve amps into breaking up earlier.

The Colour Boost by 65 Amps is a fantastic evolution of one of our favorite pedals from the 1960’s - the Germanium Treble Booster. The Colour Boost recreates the Holy Grail tones of 60’s Germanium pedals but with enhancements derived from 65 Amps diligent, decade long research into components, build quality and endless pursuit of improvement. The Colour Boost will surprise you with its modern attention to build quality, noise floors and sensitivity, all the while delivering the classic sounds you’ve sought for decades. This classic treble booster design offers 2 distinct features – classic Germanium distortion when pushed and the elusive “Ticket to Ride” clean tone when your guitar volume is rolled back. There’s no better way to the British Invasion super chime that is so hard to nail - The Colour Boost hits it perfectly! In addition to the original treble booster design, 65 has added a 4 position voicing knob that utilizes the premium coupling capacitors from SoZo that 65 uses in all their amps!Made with Premium Germanium transistors and amp parts, not pedal parts, the Colour Boost is a step forward in the modernization and improvement of classic designs. Utilizing the same amp parts used in all 65 Amps, instead of pedal parts, adds elements of tone, dynamics and quality that makes the Colour Boost a typically overbuilt 65 product. If you’re looking for the classic 60’s and 70’s Germanium voice without all the wildness and noise of those old pedals, The Colour Boost will suit your needs perfectly! Introduced in 2014.

• Premium Germanium Transistor

• Caps: SoZo• Resistors: Allen Bradley Carbon Comps and Vishay Dale Metal Films

• Control Knobs• 4 way “Voice” that notches midrange frequencies• “Gain” that adjusts the output of the Germanium Transistor

• Jacks  â€˘ Input  â€˘ Ouput  â€˘ 9VDC Power In

• Internal 9VDC Battery (non Alkaline battery preferred)

• External 9VDC direct. Germanium is reverse polarity and is not happy in a series “chain” power supply.

This pedal is based on the 1960s British Dallas Rangemaster, which was best at the time to give a treble and gain boost to the dark British amps. This allowed them to get a sound more in tune with the time, as guitars were starting to become a loud, bold, lead instrument. This pedal is a type of BOOSTER, not really a distortion pedal nor a clean boost- it does modify your sound quite a bit. It excites certain frequencies and pushes your amp to allow it to create rich tube distortion. The pedal colors your tone, with a crunchy overdrive, boosting certain frequencies, and warming the tone with NOS germanium transistors. It does not have a lot of compression and sustain like most OD pedals, but a more raw, open sound.

True Bypass switching with minimal popping.

LED for on/off status

NOS Germanium Transistor chosen for low noise and best tone.

Three-way, short and sturdy toggle switch for tone selection:

Middle: "HI" Standard Dallas Rangemaster tone, treble enhanced.

Up: MIDs, more of a full range boost, great for Fender guitars!

Down: LOW, full range sound with a bit more bassy setting.

Optional PUSH PULL volume pot allows two tone settings:

Down: "HI" Standard Dallas Rangemaster tone, treble enhanced.

Up: MIDS, more of a full range boost, great for Fender guitars!

* This can be reversed at order time if desired, or changed to MID and LOW settings.

Volume Control allows substantial boost.

Can boost volume quite a bit. Has about the same output level ON and OFF with the vol knob set at 9:00. At 11:00 there is about a 10dB boost, which sounds twice as loud. At 12:00 there is a 13dB boost, and up all the way is about an 18dB boost which is nearly twice as loud as it was at 11:00.

Durable Grey Hammertone (like original) powdercoated cast alloy case.

SIZE : 2.5" wide x 4.75" long x 1.5" tall not including switches, etc.

Silk Screened graphics as seen on the pedal at the very top of the page.

Circuit hand-wired point to point like the original. No circuit board used. I won't claim this is better than using a quality circuit board, but it works very well for this pedal. It does takes us more time to build them.

All can use a 9V Battery, a Boss style power jack is optional for $10.

When power jack is added, it can use any normal Boss type 9V power supply, with no reverse polarity issues. We add power filter circuitry to reduce power supply noise when the power jack is added.

*** CAUTION : using a daisy chained (shared) power supply on the Beano Boost can be very noisy. Best to use it's own supply, or run one output from an ISOLATED power supply (Voodoo Lab, T Rex, etc) into the Beano Boost for less noise.

This pedal uses only 5mA of power when on (LED) and barely any power when off (under .2mA!) so the battery will last hundreds of hours.

We usually run the BEANO BOOST directly into the input of your tube amp, with minimum of buffers (i.e. tuners, or non-true bypass pedals) in the signal path. Most people have found they work best near the very beginning of your signal chain. Beano should be before other drive/dirt pedals to wake them up, and to keep noise low. Like the Fuzz Face, the Beano Boost MUST NOT have a buffered pedal in front of it. Something like a Boss pedal, even off, into the Beano Boost will make it sound trebly and thin. Buffered pedals are OK after the Beano Boost if necessary.

Cleans up really well when you back down your volume control!

The Naga Viper is a booster that lives in the grand old tradition of the Dallas Rangemaster “Treble-Booster”. The original Rangemaster has been used by many influential British guitarists including Tony Iommi, Brian May, Marc Bolan, and KK Downing and Glen Tipton of Judas Priest. These guitarists, while completely unique in their styles, share the Rangemaster as the secret of boosting their cranked British tube amps into a juicy, harmonic-laden rock tone that always cuts through the mix and is ultimately proto-metal. The Naga Viper is hommage to this famous circuit. Beyond it’s basic tuning, the Naga enhances the classic circuit with the addition of two extra controls – Range and Heat. The original Rangemaster had just one control – Boost which everybody dimed anyway but essentially controlled the output volume. Our RANGE knob is a continuous control which allows you to go from classic treble-boost to a full-range boost and anywhere in-between – as the original could only function as a set frequency “treble-booster”. The HEAT knob gives you control over the gain level saturation, unlike the original which was fixed at maximum gain.

You’ve heard the rumors: Some of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest tones were achieved without pedals. Not so fast! While that’s technically true, some of the most venerable guitar gods relied on an old tape echo unit to help achieve their legendary tones. This unit is the Maestro Echoplex EP-3. While some guitarists made great use of its echo effect, others dragged one to every gig just for its magical preamp. This preamp circuit was wired always-on, and so even those using it as an echo effect received significant tonal enhancements from the preamp circuit as well. Everyone from Eddie Van Halen to East Bay Ray of the Dead Kennedys relied on the EP-3 preamp to take their sound to previously unreachable heights. And now you can also, with our Epoch Boost.

Around the shop, we refer to the Epoch Boost as a “mastering pedal,” because it sounds like your base tone, but sculpted to perfection by a mastering engineer. This is accomplished by employing the same internal circuitry as a real EP-3, from the NOS Orange Drop capacitors to the output mixer stage that acts as a rudimentary frequency selector---it’s all there. We’ve taken the liberty of kicking the internal voltage all the way up to 22 volts, just like the original unit, giving you unparalleled headroom and clarity. Inside, we’ve included a switchable hi-Z input buffer if you’d like to use the Epoch Boost as your only pedal (don’t worry, we won’t judge). The Boost control gives you just the EP-3 tone when rolled off, but adds up to 20dB of crystal-clear boost as you crank it. And trust us, you’re gonna want to.

EP+

EP+

  • ClinchFX
$149.00

The ClinchFX EP+ is is based on the enormously successful ClinchFX EP-PRE. The “front end” is a standard EP-PRE common-source JFET preamplifier which includes the ability to select EP-3 early or late serial number tones. In the EP+ there is a second JFET boost stage, similar to the EP-PRE circuit, but with reduced output impedance. Regardless of the reduced output impedance, this second stage is an active boost stage, not a unity gain buffer.

One advantage of reduced output impedance is that the EP+ can drive longer cable runs without losing high frequencies.

The internal charge-pump voltage doubler power supply allows the EP+ deliver up to 18db of clean boost. The exact amount of boost available depends on how hard you drive the input of the EP+. As with any amplifier circuit, excessive input levels will cause clipping, but when driven to clipping, the EP+ creates a softer type of clipping, unlike many other solid state circuits.

A big plus in using a boost stage instead of a buffer is that the pedal retains the tone enhancing qualities of the already successful EP-PRE.

Volume Control

With the Volume Control fully anti-clockwise, there will be no output from the EP+. As you turn the control in a clockwise direction, the output will increase.

Stomp Switch

We have these switches custom made to our specification, which includes gold contacts for maximum reliability when switching very low current in pedals.

PCB

As with our other pedals, the PCB has a full ground plane on one side to improve noise immunity.

Power Supply

The EP+ pedal operates from a 9-12V DC, Centre Negative power supply that has become the standard for most pedals.

The EP+ has the same Charge-Pump power supply that has proven successful in the EP-PRE. The charge-pump converts 9 Volts to more than 17 Volts, or 12 Volts to just over 23 Volts. At either voltage, careful selection of the JFETS used in the pedal ensures plenty of headroom for clean boost.

The Boost-EQ is a low-noise discrete transistor based clean boost with an innovative EQ section.

The EQ borrows the powerful tilt equalization control from the Diamond Compressor and adds a new midrange cut/boost control for simple yet powerful tone shaping with just two knobs. Use the tilt to subtly brighten or darken your tone, then use the mids control to add more solo bite. Even dial in humbucker tones from single coil pickups!

The up to 16dB signal boost (about a 6.5 time increase in a guitars output voltage swing) can push most tube amp input stages well into overdrive territory - but with a wider frequency range and more responsive feel than standard diode clipping overdrive pedals. The boost-EQ's simple goal is to enhance the natural drive character of a guitar amp's tubes - anywhere from a light clean solo boost with 2-4 dB of gain, to heavier tube breakup with higher level boost.

  • premium audio components, including 2% polypropylene capacitors,1% metal film resistors and a pro audio grade opamp (our signal path opamp alone costs 8 to 10 times what the industry norm uses).
  • post-boost 'tilt' EQ provides a very musical tailoring of frequency response - seamlessly transition from a darker jazz voicing to a brighter jangle, with flat frequency response at the center detent position.
  • midrange cut/boost EQ placed at the fulcrum of the tilt EQ for a unique parametric EQ response
  • dual AC capacitive coupling paths for improved transient response.
  • battery or standard negative tip 9V DC adapter operation, can be powered from 9 to 18 V negative tip

The Diamond Marquis is based on the boost section of the popular, but very limited edition Diamond J-Drive TR which is in turn based on classic treble booster circuits. Ideally suited to pushing the front end of an already overdriven amplifier the Marquis offers the choice of a classic Germanium treble boost sounds or a ‘Hybrid’ mode that provides a clean, full range boost.

When people hear the term ‘germanium treble boost pedal’, they often assume that it simply boosts treble frequencies much like an EQ. In fact, germanium boosters generally cut some low end while boosting the upper mids. They also tend to introduce a certain amount of ‘grit’ or overdrive of their own. By running this ‘hot’ signal into an already overdriven amplifier (or a good overdrive pedal) you can produce a very different result from simply turning up the treble.

Germanium treble boosters are responsible for some of the most well known guitar tones of the 60’s and 70’s, providing increased overdrive and sustain along with a characteristic sonic signature.

Sparkly or darkly, the DOD Bifet Boost 410 (2014) has the tone and volume to boost your solos into orbit. New for the DOD Bifet Boost 410 (2014), is a selectable Buffer On/Off toggle switch. This switch affects the bypass state of the undefined Bifet Boost and gives it the flexibility to be used anywhere in your FX chain. Use it first in the chain with the buffer off so that the buffer won’t affect fuzz pedals, or put it last in the chain with the buffer on to counter the signal loss of today’s larger packed pedalboards. The Bifet Boost can deliver a huge amount of output to hit the front of your amp and drive it into distortion. The DOD 410 is often described as a clean boost, but there is just a little hint of grit in there that works well with already cooking tube amps. The DOD Bifet Boost also works very well as an “always on”, touch-sensitive and dynamic, tone sweetener in conjunction with guitar volume knob usage practiced by experienced players. The DOD Bifet Boost also has all of the added features of the new DOD pedals: True Bypass, LED, and modern PSU jack. Like its predecessor, the DOD Bifet Boost 410 (2014) offers independent Volume and Tone controls. Volume controls the amount of boost, and Tone allows for either bass or treble boost. True bypass allows your guitar tone to remain pristine even when the new DOD 410 (2014) is off. This is a big difference from the original, which would color your bypassed tone. The modern 9V DC power supply input also makes the pedal more pedalboard friendly.

The Mid knob sets the amount of boost or cut applied to the mid frequencies at 500Hz(up to 15Db). At 12 o'clock it is nonactive, and delivers a flat EQ response. The Gain knob boosts the level up to 35Db, adding a bit of grit as you crank it. The Volume knob is the master volume control of the Middleman. Ibanez is proud to announce a new addition to the MINI pedal lineup. The BTMINI booster features three controls; BASS, TREBLE and LEVEL. Unlike a single knob booster, the BASS and TREBLE EQ enables significant tonal flexibility. For example, while set to the ""Wide Range"" setting (Turing Bass and Treble all the way up) the guitar tone will become broader, with more volume and presence across the entire frequency range, and the ""Mid Boost"" setting is ideal for cutting though a band mix. All of the design, development, production, and quality control for the BTMINI has been done in Japan. The BTMINI also features a Japanese-made JRC MUSES 8820, a high-quality op-amp used in amplifiers that delivers tonal brightness, even while the amp is pushed into overdrive. A true bypass switch provides the shortest, most direct signal path, as well as the cleanest possible sound. When set at 50% or more, the Prestige gives you the ability to break up your tube amp in a smooth and natural way resulting in real tube overdrive from the preamp section of your tube amp. The last 25% of the volume range can completely destroy your amp in the best way possible, resulting in rich soaring sustain, breakup, and on some amps even a smooth warm fuzzy growl.

This super small 1.5"x3.5" booster can do what needs to be done no matter what the task. If you need a little magic in your life, look no further

Clean and super powerful

MINI KATANA CLEAN BOOST! Keeley’s oldest design made smaller and with tasteful updates including an additional feature. The Katana started back in 2002 within the Time Machine Boost. It was a dual class A JFET design that gave players and incredible boost and sounded so good they never turned off. In fact they often ran two or three on stages like John Mayer! The Mini Katana boost provides over 35dB of boost. Enough for the most demanding players and sound reinforcement.

New for the Mini Katana – 4 MODES!

The new Mini Katana is now a 4 Mode Booster! With the dual micro switches you have a total of four sounds possible. Need drive, just flip the micro Hi-Gain Switch inside and you’ve got overdriven tone! Flip the Hi-Cut Switch (NEW for the Katana Mini!) on the inside and you have a warmer tone to soften any Strat or Tele. Flip both switches and you have the ultimate sounding boost, thick, creamy, tube-amp sounding, and plenty of volume on tap!

Obsessed with cleanest, most enjoyable tone boosted? Well, Before other people started using Blue LED’s and non-diode clipping stages, there was the TMB and Katana…. Cascading FET stages do the tube-amp-thing like nothing else!

Now made smaller, it will fit any board – any budget. Enjoy a tasteful update to the pedal that redefined clean boost in the boutique era!

Need a clean boost or is your treble not cutting through the mix? Perhaps you just want another sick overdrive. Well my friends search no more! The Mad Professor Ruby Red Booster CB can do it all. With any combination of the pedals treble boost, clean boost or overdrive at your feet your tone will be present with just the right amount of punch

The two boosters are based on the much sought after BJF Little Red Trebler and Red Rooster Booster, connected in that order and with a master volume control. Also, the Mad Professor RRB puts a massive 40dB of boost in front of an amp for a nice shimmer or a full on heavy overdrive. Lastly, with the master output knob it is super easy to dial in the right amount needed for any situation.

• MASTER – this is a volume control that is

located directly after the booster circuit and

when set to max it is just a resistor to ground.

This control sets the fi nal output and it can be

used to control the output when the pedal is used

 for overdrive (Boost turned up).

• TREBLE – set treble boost from zero to about

15dB. The treble frequency and bandwidth are

carefully tuned with an optimized bass slope.

• BOOST – the gain of the booster and can be set

from unity to about 40dB of boost. When this

control is cranked the unit will distort within itself.

• BUFFER – inside the pedal there is a switch for

a high quality buffer. You can set the pedal for true

bypass mode or “buffer on” in bypass mode.

We recommend using a buffer in your signal chain

to help with the treble and gain loss from using

 many pedals and/or long cables.

The Wampler Pedals “Clean Buffer” was an extremely well-liked pedal during its production, known for its purity of tone and for offering fantastic buffering that allowed pretty much any gear to get along nicely. We've had constant requests since it was discontinued to make just a few more, or from people wondering when it would be coming back?

The Wampler Pedals “Talent Booster” is another favorite from the past, a pedal which could make your tone not just louder, but better, too. Calls for another Wampler Pedals boost intensified when the “SLOstortion” was released, with many users loving the boost side of that 2-in-1 pedal so much that they've been requesting Brian put his mind to making Wampler Pedals users a new boost pedal that they could put wherever they want.

With so many people asking for a buffer and so many people asking for a boost, what could we do? The only reasonable thing, of course: we listened! And true to form, Brian figured “why do just one when we can do both?”

Meet the decibel+ Buffer|Boost, a pedal that offers excellent, stable buffering AND a fantastic clean boost, in one great, durable, easy-to-use package! With one single knob to accomplish everything, it trims the fat – we didn't want to make a booster that does too much to be considered just booster, but not enough to be considered a legitimate light overdrive. Plus, functionality like that tends to just run up the price. Brian's goal was to make sure that this pedal can buffer with excellent fidelity, boost like nobody's business, yet be as easy to work with as possible. No unnecessary complications of either function, and no sacrifices when it comes to the core tone!

Whichever you need from it, it's ready to deliver. Studio or stage, it's a one-knob problem solver toolkit in pedal form. Just dial that one knob where you need it to go and you'll have the functionality you need right then – and if you ever need it to turn from buffer to boost, or boost to buffer, it's as simple as adjusting that one control.

What can you say about a boost pedal? If it’s made correctly, it boosts your instrument’s signal, driving your amp and letting everyone in the crowd know you f’n rock. The good folks at Way Huge Electronics / Jim Dunlop have created a boost pedal that not only pummels your amp, but adds in a special little lite and punch to your tone as well.

The Angry Troll is a boost capable of pumping up to +50dB of gain into your signal – WHAT? That’s a TON on tap, and if you really need that much, maybe you should take a look at your setup. However, this red bastard doesn’t just boost – a second control knob, Anger, is a rotary switch with six different Fists of Fury positions, which adjust the amount of gain created by the pedal’s op-amp. Interacting with the Volume control, you get a vintage mic pre amp type of sound, with a little dirt foe extra good measure.

The mighty Angry Troll serves up gorgeous portions of volume and gain to pummel the input of your amp. It adds bite and punch while transforming your anemic and mild mannered tone into a beastly sonic onslaught!

The Angry Troll’s two controls interact like a vintage mic pre amp. The Anger knob—a rotary switch with six Fists of Fury positions—adjusts the amount of gain created by the Troll’s op-amp, while the Volume knob regulates the overall output level. High grade components are used for a precisely tuned circuit that works like an extension of your amp.

Delivers up to +50dB of gain for super amp pummeling power!

The original AC pedal has a certain amount of compression inherent to its drive, so for the Comp version they added a three-position toggle switch which selects the amount it compresses the signal. The position labeled "norm" is the medium amount of the original pedal; the middle position compresses very little, hardly at all; and the position labeled "comp" totally flattens the signal. There really is a dramatic amount of change between the three settings. Since the resulting effect just changes the dynamics of the distortion, and is not a separate dynamic control for your signal, it doesn't make much sense to talk about attack time, or whether it works as a limiter. I would not advertise or recommend this pedal as a compressor per se, that's not what it's for. But the low and high compression settings really do make a huge difference in the performance and value of the overdrive. Personally I like the "no compression" setting best.

Xotic effects have become synonymous with tonal quality & their range of boosters/ overdrives have been adopted by players such as Eric JohnsonScott HendersonSteve Stevens & Greg Howe (to name but a few). Models such as the AC BoosterRC Booster & BB Preamp all became instant classics shortly after their introduction & the range has continued to grow even more impressive with every release since. Xotic are a company that listen to their customers &, having found that a number of players were stacking their pedals together (e.g. a BB Preamp with an RC Booster, or an AC with an RC), it was in 2007 that they released their first dual pedal: the AC Plus.

The AC Plus is a dual overdrive/boost pedal that can be used in varying combinations to achieve a whole gamut of different drive related tones. Its adornment of knobs & switches offer true flexibility & its pedigree certainly sets the bar high. Why don't we dive in & see how it measures up…

The first thing that strikes you with the AC Plus is its name! It suggests a connection to the beloved AC Booster & one would certainly approach this pedal expecting a resemblance in character perhaps. The powder coated finish, paint-splat font, True Bypass switching & 1Mohm input impedance all stay true to usual Xotic form & users of other pedals within the line should immediately feel at home with the AC Plus.

In terms of controls, although the pedal might look a little complicated on first inspection, the thing to remember is that it is essentially two pedals in one chassis (if you were to draw an imaginary line down the middle of the unit, the controls on the left-hand side would control channel B and everything on the right would be for channel A). Let's start with channel A…

Channel A features 'Volume', 'Gain' & 'Tone' controls, as well as a 'Boost' switch. The 'Volume' & 'Gain' knobs both control the levels of their respective features, the 'Tone' knob allows you to attenuate your treble & upper-midrange frequencies to taste (as per the norm for overdrive pedals) & the 'Boost' switch allows you to increase bass & lower-midrange frequencies by +3dB. Channel A has more gain on tap than channel B & it is as easy as pie to dial in.

For Channel B you will find 'Volume', 'Gain', 'Bass', 'Mid' & 'Treble' controls, as well as a 'Comp' switch. The controls are all self-explanatory save for the 'Comp' switch, which allows you to switch between soft & hard clipping. With the button depressed you get earlier break-up & the channel exhibits gain levels similar to that of a TS-808; with it in the 'up' position there's a later break-up & it functions more like a clean boost. Channel B is the far more flexible of the two, but is arguably less transparent & a touch more fiddly to dial in.

The eagle-eyed among you may well have noticed that there's still one other button left for us to talk about; it's labelled 'A>B/B>A' & it's located bang in the middle of the pedal. This button really adds to the flexibility of the AC Plus & it comes into play when stacking both channels together; its purpose is to allow you (the user) to dictate the signal-flow depending on your specific needs. For instance, say you had your amp set with plenty of clean headroom & were using channel A of the AC Plus as your main overdrive. Perhaps you then wanted to use channel B as a clean boost to raise your overall level for soloing (you could even tweak the EQ on channel B to add in an extra dollop of singing mids should you wish); well, no problem, just set the button to the A>B position. Alternatively, maybe you wanted to use channel B to hit the front end of channel A that little bit harder & thus achieve that extra level of saturation; well, just put the switch in the B>A position & hey presto! This little button really allows you to get the most out of the AC Plus by putting every possible permutation of the tones it can conjure right at your fingertips.

Do expensive strings sound better? (The Ultimate String Test!)

So, I decided to put together a list of guitar strings. I went ahead and bought every pack I could get my hands on, ranging from plain strings to round cores to coated strings – you name it. My aim with this list is to test these strings blindly in a head-to-head tournament. To make the comparison easier, I'm conducting these tests on two identical guitars that have been set up the same way and sound identical. Well, they did need some work initially, but now, all the differences you hear are purely from the strings themselves.

To reduce the initial brightness that many strings tend to have, I opened the packs two weeks before recording this list, letting them react with the air. I can't say for sure how much this affects the strings, but it certainly can't hurt. Judging by my research, it seems that most of you aren't using fresh strings either, so this should be interesting.

Creating a list like this can either be a bit awkward or a whole lot of fun, and I'm leaning towards the latter.

Best Value Electric Guitars For Beginners

These are not the cheapest guitars on the market, but there is plenty of evidence to show that buying a slightly more expensive (but still reasonably affordable) guitar pays off in both sound quality and likelihood of wanting to pick up your guitar and play. And wanting to play the guitar is an important part of pushing through that initial learning curve. These guitars are nearer to the cheap end of the market, but the step up in quality for entry level guitars if huge.  Most beginners will be very hard to distinguish from much higher priced models, and will be able play these for years without feeling like they have to upgrade.
